What motivated the adaptation decisions?
The creative team members behind this project are big big fans of the original work by John Bunyan. It’s loaded with so many amazing characters and challenges and other goodies that represent important aspects of the Christian journey. In order for the material to be accessible to our junior audience, we wanted to streamline and make it as simple as possible. We kept as much in there as we thought their 3-9 year-old experiences (and attention spans) could appreciate. We also wanted to make sure that the total run time of the book would clock in at barely more than an hour. We didn’t want this to be something that had to be broken up into too many sessions. We hoped it would be something that could replace family movie night. How awesome to be able to sit with your kids and read all the way through in one sitting. We wanted excite them to ask questions rather than overload them with too many metaphors. The main thing that fans of the original will notice is the absence of the Cross and the burdens. We just didn’t feel that most of our young kids would appreciate the weight of the burdens that Bunyan’s adult pilgrim endured. The Cross was merged with the Small Wooden Gate AND, if you pay close attention, you’ll see the cross popping up throughout the illustrations – in the gate, the Evangelist’s necklace, Christian’s window, the jail cell, the Throne, etc. Our whole team agrees that there can be no Christian journey without the Cross.
